NYU Langone plans to construct a state-of-the-art 500-bed academic hospital in Long Island

NYU Langone Health Plans New Hospital in Long Island

This week, NYU Langone Health revealed its ambitious intention to construct a cutting-edge academic hospital on Long Island, featuring over 500 inpatient rooms alongside a new medical school.

The location for this new medical facility will be in Melville, situated in Suffolk County, near the Nassau border. Alec Kimmelman, the CEO of NYU Langone, mentioned that the hospital aims to draw in patients from various parts of the region.

“With all our outpatient facilities in Nassau and Suffolk and the location of this hospital, we think we can create an ecosystem where we can basically care for patients from the tip of Montauk all the way to Queens,” Kimmelman stated in a recent discussion.

The planned hospital is expected to include around 500 private inpatient rooms, along with 70 emergency rooms and modern operating theaters. Moreover, it will house the tuition-free NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine and dedicated research areas.

As Kimmelman pointed out, they have a substantial outpatient presence on Long Island, boasting approximately 120 outpatient facilities. “We want to be able to provide all of these patients with the best inpatient care available today, and we think this hospital will be a great way to do that in the future,” he added.

The construction project is anticipated to span several years and will require approval from both state authorities and Huntington officials. Recently, NYU Langone acquired a 45-acre site in the Huntington Quadrangle for a notable $135.5 million.

This hospital would mark the first to be built on Long Island since 1980. Suffolk County Executive Edward Romaine and Huntington City Supervisor Ed Smith have both voiced their support for the initiative.

“It will definitely be an important addition to Melville Town Center and the surrounding area,” Smith commented. He expressed eagerness to hear more details about NYU Langone’s plans in the near future.

Moreover, the construction is projected to generate around 8,000 union jobs and another 2,500 indirect jobs in the vicinity. Officials from Langone believe that thousands of permanent positions will also be created once the hospital opens.

The proposed hospital is set to complement the expanding network of NYU Langone facilities across the tri-state area. This includes the upcoming NYU Langone Ambulatory Care Garden City, expected to launch in 2024, along with another outpatient center in Nassau.

The NYU Langone system extends to include the New York University Langone Hospital in Mineola and another facility in Patchogue, Suffolk County. Fiona Druckenmiller, chair of the NYU Langone College Board of Trustees, emphasized, “With these plans for Melville, we can’t think of a better way to continue fulfilling our triple mission of care, education, and discovery here on Long Island.”
