Venice Seafood Restaurant Faces Backlash Over Misleading Fish Sourcing

A trendy seafood spot in Venice has found itself in hot water after admitting it misrepresented the source of its fish, causing quite a stir among patrons.

This happened shortly after the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced that the Dudley Market would pay over $100,000 in fines while publicly recognizing years of illegal fishing practices. Naturally, angry customers flocked to Yelp to voice their frustration with a flood of negative reviews.

One reviewer commented, “I won’t support places that claim to sell fresh, legally sourced seafood if that’s a blatant lie.” They added, “I didn’t want to give it a star, but I have to!”

Another dissatisfied patron said, “He’s a deceitful owner who acts like the rules don’t apply to him.” They lamented, “It’s unfortunate that the fishing industry has negative impacts on wildlife.”

The backlash intensified after it was revealed that, during 2020 and 2021, the restaurant operated using unlicensed commercial vessels to illegally catch rockfish and trafficked sport-caught bluefin tuna and yellowtail.

One outraged Yelp user warned, “Do not go here! They’re unethical.” This came from someone who couldn’t reconcile supporting a restaurant that built its reputation around sustainability while engaging in illegal fishing practices.

“This price is absolutely shocking considering they were dishonest about their food sourcing,” another user remarked, reflecting general disbelief over the situation.

Dudley Market, which had promoted itself as a hyper-local establishment with much of its fish sourced by its own team, now faces scorn for betraying consumer trust.

Santa Barbara County District Attorney John Savnock emphasized, “Violating fishing regulations jeopardizes both the environment and the fish stocks crucial for sustainable fishing in the future.”

Officials disclosed that owners Connor Mitchell and Taylor Grant used commercial vessels to illegally gather fish for their restaurant operations.

They ran the market in conjunction with the Dudley Street Oyster Bar and Shark Bite Fish Company, with a commercial vessel owned by Cody Martin supplying fish to the Dudley Market.

Mitchell stated that the violations were addressed, and he claims to have had a good relationship with state regulators since then.

“When these matters were brought to our attention, we worked with the authorities to rectify the situation and have been compliant ever since,” he explained, adding, “We’re proud of our fishing and restaurant business, the transparency we maintain, and we believe we’ve been doing things correctly for the past five years.”
