John Bolton Consents to Guilty Plea for Serious Mishandling of Classified Documents

Plea Deal for John Bolton

John Bolton, known for his criticism of former President Trump, has reached a plea agreement in which he’ll plead guilty to one count of “unlawful possession of classified national security documents.” This information was reported by CNN.

Initially, Bolton faced serious charges including “eight counts of transmitting national defense information” and “ten counts of possessing national defense information.” If found guilty of these allegations, he could have faced substantial prison time.

The potential penalty for his plea is up to five years in prison, yet under this new arrangement, it seems he will only serve a $2.25 million fine and avoid jail time altogether. However, there remains a chance that the judge could still impose a prison sentence on the 77-year-old.

By pleading guilty to a felony charge, Bolton risks losing his right to vote and his ability to own a firearm.

The Justice Department alleges Bolton sent over 1,000 pages of confidential material to his wife and daughter. He supposedly printed these documents and kept them at home. His motivations appear to have been to assist in writing a memoir critical of Trump.

Bolton had a brief tenure as National Security Adviser during the Trump administration, a role many believe he accepted to undermine the president and boost his visibility in the media and political arenas. Even Trump admitted later that he should have let Bolton go sooner.

Trump has since revoked Bolton’s Secret Service protection, labeling him as a “scumbag” and one of Washington’s “dumbest people.”

Bolton, like many who seem consumed by their disdain for Trump, faces a downfall in his long career. It’s noteworthy that he’s pleading guilty to actions that endangered national security, which contradicts his past stance of advocating for military action against perceived threats.

What irony.

It’s rather unfortunate for him.

Bolton’s arraignment is set for July 26, allowing plenty of time for the public to prepare for the event.
