The Washington Mystics are turning Alicia Flores’ developmental contract into a full contract for the rest of the season, as reported by ESPN’s Kareem Copeland. This 22-year-old rookie from Spain has been averaging 7.3 points and 4.3 assists over three games.
Flores signed her developmental contract on May 7 and made her WNBA debut on May 27. Since then, she has become a key player for the Mystics, playing around 22.3 minutes per game and showing that she can effectively manage the offense, especially given her age.
Before joining the Mystics, Flores was with Encino Lugo, a Spanish club in La Liga Femenina, where she averaged slightly over 11 points, five rebounds, and five assists per game last season.
Copeland also mentioned that Mystics head coach Sidney Johnson recently praised Flores for her contributions to the team. “I think her performance is a reflection of how we want to play here in D.C.,” Johnson noted. “She’s a young woman who plays with incredible intensity. There’s a certain toughness you need in basketball, and she’s a fantastic teammate.”
Flores currently has a 2-1 record with the Mystics and scored eight points with three assists and a steal in a recent 90-72 win over the Chicago Sky. Meanwhile, Georgia Amoua, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 draft, has been the starting point guard for Washington this season. Amoua, who missed her rookie year due to an ACL injury, has been struggling, averaging only 5.9 points and 3.8 assists per game while shooting just 27.1 percent from the field over eight games.
Besides Flores, other guards like Lucy Olsen, Lori Harmon, and Cassandra Prosper are also competing for backup spots this season. It’s uncertain if Flores will eventually take Amoua’s place in the starting lineup, but her performance thus far suggests she has earned her place on the developmental roster. This season marks the first time WNBA teams can have two players on developmental contracts, which can later be upgraded to standard roster contracts, due to a new clause in the latest collective bargaining agreement.
The Portland Fire had previously converted Frieda Buhner and Holly Winterburn from developmental contracts to standard ones, setting a precedent. Now, the Mystics are following suit, assigning one of their 12 standard roster spots to Flores.
