New Jersey Governor Increases Funding for Immigration Defense

On Thursday evening, New Jersey’s Democratic governor announced plans to allocate millions more from taxpayer funds into a legal initiative designed to support undocumented immigrants facing deportation.

“We are boosting funding for the Detention and Deportation Defense Initiative by $12 million, bringing the total to $20.2 million,” Gov. Mikie Sherrill shared on social media.

Additionally, she unveiled a rapid legal response initiative aimed at enhancing statewide legal assistance for emergency immigration defenses. This program is set to offer free legal representation to immigrants within the state who are at risk of deportation.

Sherrill characterized this funding increase as a measure to uphold the human rights of individuals living illegally in the U.S. She stated, “These actions will help ensure that more people in New Jersey communities have access to due process and empower New Jersey attorneys to protect the basic human rights of detainees and their families.”

This announcement follows nearly two weeks of intense confrontations between protesters and immigration officials outside Delaney Hall, a detention center in Newark for undocumented immigrants.

New Jersey State Police had to collaborate with federal authorities earlier this week to manage the unrest.

In a recent event disrupting federal immigration actions, far-left protestors established a blockade at the detention center’s entrance, obstructing staff movement. They even directed threats towards law enforcement officers in attendance.

The Department of Homeland Security reported multiple arrests related to this situation, and it was noted that some detainees at the facility were reportedly engaged in a hunger strike.

Sherrill’s decision to protect undocumented immigrants drew sharp criticism from conservative circles. New Jersey Congressman Jerry Scharfenberger remarked, “At a time when residents are grappling with one of the highest tax burdens in the nation, it’s unconscionable for the Governor to spend over $20 million on the Illegal Alien Defense Fund.”

Another user on X chimed in, expressing outrage: “Nothing signifies ‘priority’ more than spending another $12 million on lawyers for individuals who shouldn’t even be here. Why not focus on fixing our roads and schools instead?”

Fox News Digital attempted to contact Sherrill’s office for comment but did not receive a response before publication.
