Arrest Made in Shooting Death of Indiana University Graduate
Police have arrested a 14-year-old in connection with the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Brett Scrogham, a recent business school graduate from Indiana University. The incident occurred on May 28 in a downtown parking lot in Indianapolis.
According to investigators, the suspect shot Scrogham while he was sitting in his car, heading to a minor league baseball game. The identity of the young suspect has not been disclosed by the authorities.
In Indiana, the boy could potentially be tried as an adult, though this requires a specific legal procedure to waive jurisdiction. He was taken into custody on Wednesday.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found Scrogham suffering from gunshot wounds. Tragically, he later died at the hospital.
IMPD Chief Tanya Terry expressed her sorrow, stating, “While this arrest is significant, my heart breaks for everyone affected by this tragedy. One young man has lost his life, and another faces charges that will change his life forever.”
Seth Davis, a friend of Scrogham, shared his thoughts: “My friend Brett was violently murdered last week in broad daylight, as he was with family for an Indians game. Just weeks after graduating with honors from IU’s Kelley School of Business, he was a kind, well-spoken individual who had just landed a job as a real estate development analyst. The world needs more people like him.”
Marion County Attorney Ryan Mears is anticipated to share further updates on the case during a press briefing on Friday morning.
