Lamine Yamal’s Injury Ahead of the 2026 World Cup
Lamine Yamal, the talented 18-year-old player, has missed Spain’s preparation matches leading up to the 2026 World Cup and will face the tournament without participating in a game since April. The timing seems really unfortunate for Yamal, who, at just 16, celebrated a victory with Spain in the Euros and is seen as one of the rising stars of this tournament.
He sustained a hamstring injury shortly after Barcelona’s penalty against Celta Vigo on April 22, sidelining him for six weeks. I suppose it’s tough for such a young talent to deal with an injury at a crucial moment.
While he won’t risk playing in this Thursday’s friendly against Iraq, he also won’t be available for the match against Peru on June 9. This gives him just a handful of days to prove that he can be fit enough to participate in Spain’s opening game against Cape Verde in Atlanta on June 15.
It’s not just about whether he’ll take the field for the first match, but also about if, after two months off, he can regain his usual form. Fitness and sharpness, they say, are two different animals, right? Even if he gets cleared in time, there’s a lingering concern about whether he can return as the player that defenses have been preparing to counter.
In his absence, Spain played to a 1-1 draw with Iraq, which isn’t a match to overanalyze, but it did highlight some struggles within the team. Spain seemed to move the ball without much control, which, I suppose, hints at some deeper issues that tactical tweaks couldn’t resolve.
Coach Luis de la Fuente, however, remains hopeful that Yamal could contribute in some way against Cape Verde and be in top shape for the second group match against Saudi Arabia on June 21. “If nothing changes, we will be ready to play on June 15,” he stated. But he added a note of caution, indicating that Yamal might only get a handful of minutes or focus on building his condition for the later game. It seems there will be an evaluation ahead.
De la Fuente recognizes the weight of expectations on his young star’s shoulders. “He’s incredibly excited, incredibly enthusiastic, very young but very mature,” the coach remarked, expressing faith in Yamal’s abilities. “He knows this is his moment. Who knows what he will do in the next World Cup? This is Lamine Yamal’s moment.” But, the question remains—will his body hold up? That’s certainly something to keep an eye on.
