Kawhi Leonard and Steve Ballmer of the Clippers have spoken with investigators.

NBA officials have started interviews with Kawhi Leonard, the star player for the Los Angeles Clippers, along with his uncle and business advisor, Dennis Robertson. This follows revelations on the podcast “Discovering Pablo Torre,” suggesting that Clippers owner Steve Ballmer’s company, Aspiration, received a $50 million investment from Ballmer’s personal LLC in September 2021.

Leonard, Robertson, and Ballmer are now under scrutiny, particularly after a $28 million endorsement deal between Leonard and Aspiration was publicized shortly after the investment. Additionally, Torre recently disclosed that Ballmer invested another $10 million in March 2023, indicating that these kinds of financial arrangements might not be isolated incidents.

The interview process seems to be quite extensive. Alongside Leonard, other Clippers executives are also being interviewed by the NBA’s private investigation team. Recently, before the NBA Finals kicked off, Commissioner Adam Silver mentioned that the inquiry was progressing and nearing its end.

Silver stated, “This investigation is being conducted by a law firm independent of the NBA. We’re covering the costs, but they are operating separately from the league office. I’ve communicated to them that we can’t extend this investigation indefinitely; it needs to conclude at some point. However, ensuring that we get the right outcome is crucial.”

While Silver did not specify a timeline for the investigation’s conclusion, he emphasized the importance of understanding the operational context for the Clippers and the other 29 teams in the league.

In the meantime, federal prosecutors have commented on the situation surrounding the Aspiration investigation into Leonard, implying that it’s challenging to envision a reasonable explanation for the actions in question. Since allegations emerged, both Ballmer and the Clippers have firmly denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that there’s no evidence to substantiate the claims.

ESPN noted that they have engaged with NBA officials and those involved with the league regarding potential outcomes. There may be some resistance from the National Basketball Players Association and other team owners as the investigation unfolds.
