Maya Hawke Reflects on Her Upbringing with Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke
Maya Hawke recently shared insights into her childhood, influenced by her famous parents, Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke.
In an interview, she expressed her fascination with the “witch-adjacent” therapies her mother introduced her to growing up. “My mother really taught me to love and respect nature,” she explained. “Like, herbal remedies for various ailments. It’s a bit like ‘The Witch’s Next Door.’ It’s not really hard or complicated, but definitely adventurous.”
One vivid memory from her childhood was drinking pineapple skin tea when she had a cold. “The enzymes in pineapple skin are supposedly good for treating colds,” she noted, almost nostalgically.
Describing her father, Maya remarked about his unique way of thinking. “He’s a magical thinker,” she said, clarifying, “I wouldn’t call him a witch, but he used to orchestrate treasure hunts for me as a kid. He’s cunning and magical, just not a witch.”
The “Stranger Things” star recalled growing up between Manhattan and upstate New York, mentioning her mother’s passion for gardening. “Uma is a great gardener,” she said with admiration, noting that her mother’s love for nature had a profound influence on her. Maya often spent time alongside her mother, kneeling in the garden, gathering ingredients for soup. She realized only later how significant her parents were in the public eye, often too absorbed in her simple tasks to notice.
Maya is part of a notable Hollywood family—Ethan, her father, is acclaimed for roles in films like *Dead Poets Society* and *Boyhood*, while Uma gained fame from her iconic roles in *Pulp Fiction* and *Kill Bill*.
Ethan and Uma first met on the set of *Gattaca*. They married in 1998 but eventually divorced in 2005. Maya, following in their artistic footsteps, has made a name for herself not just as an actress but also as a singer-songwriter, known especially for her role as Robin Buckley in the popular Netflix series.
Maya has four siblings. She has one full brother, Levon, and through her father’s marriage to Ryan Shawhughes, she has two half-sisters, Clementine and Indiana. Additionally, she has another half-sister, Luna, from her mother’s relationship with financier Arpad Busson.
