Carnival Cruise Lines is tightening restrictions on bikini wear at its South Pacific destinations, urging travelers to be aware that local dress codes might be more conservative than what they experience onboard.

As reported by Cruise Hive, passengers aboard the Carnival Splendor were alerted before docking in Lifou, New Caledonia, to observe local customs and to dress modestly while on land.

This notice came ahead of the ship’s visit to the island on June 2 during an eight-night cruise that started in Sydney.

In particular, passengers were told to steer clear of G-strings, thongs, and monokinis, as well as to refrain from topless sunbathing, according to the magazine.

Carnival has been contacted for additional comments regarding the new rules.

The dress code is applicable beyond just the beaches, covering public places like markets, churches, and community centers.

This crackdown aligns with guidelines Carnival has already provided on its official website.

“We ask that you respect the local culture and rules of the ports you visit,” the guidelines state.

Lifou has been specifically noted by cruise lines as a location where modest attire is necessary.

Carnival mentioned that some areas, like Lifou, host indigenous communities with rich cultural traditions that often emphasize respect and religion.

The guidelines state that visitors should wear traditional one-piece swimwear and avoid bikinis while at the beach.

Furthermore, Carnival has cautioned that not adhering to local customs might impact the potential for future voyages to the island.

Reports indicate that non-compliance could jeopardize Carnival’s ability to include Lifou in its itineraries moving forward.

This reminder about dress codes comes amid a broader push from cruise lines to highlight rules specific to destinations, which might vary significantly from on-board regulations.

While Carnival generally permits casual resort wear during the day, they expect guests’ attire to be respectful towards others and suitable for the occasion.

Discussions surrounding Carnival’s swimsuit policy have been longstanding among passengers, revealing a mix of opinions.

“Wear what you want to wear,” suggested one Reddit user.

In contrast, another traveler pointed out that revealing swimsuits seem to be the norm on many cruises, noting, “People wear such swimsuits all the time.”

There are varying views, with some believing that guests should be more considerate, especially in family-oriented areas.

One commenter proposed, “Maybe you could save those for an adults-only area or hot tub.” After all, “Carnival is family-oriented, and there are many kids on board.”
