Alex Smith shares candid thoughts on Brock Purdy

From Irrelevance to Stardom: Brock Purdy’s Journey

Brock Purdy has certainly made a name for himself since being drafted by the 49ers as the 262nd pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. It’s quite a transformation, really.

Recently, former 49ers quarterback Alex Smith appeared on The Klug Show with Larry Krueger. When Smith was asked what sets Purdy apart, he didn’t hesitate to share his thoughts.

“I think he’s really well-prepared and has a solid grasp of the game. He seems to process information quickly,” Smith remarked. “Honestly, he seems much more mature than his age. When I first met him, I thought, ‘Are you, like, 35 or something?’ He has this mature outlook that’s just impressive.”

In contrast to Purdy, Smith was selected as Mr. Irrelevant after being picked first overall by the 49ers in the 2005 NFL Draft.

Smith had a long and notable career, spanning 14 years in the NFL, with seven of those years spent with the 49ers. Notably, in 2011, he shared the quarterback position with Colin Kaepernick during a season that led the 49ers to the Super Bowl against the Baltimore Ravens, although he later found himself on the bench as Kaepernick took over.

Much like Kaepernick, Purdy quickly stepped into the role of starting quarterback during his rookie year after injuries sidelined Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo.

During his first season, Purdy guided the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Unfortunately, he had to leave early due to an elbow injury from a sack by defensive end Haason Reddick, cutting his game short.

A Rising Star

Fast forward to his second season and Purdy was selected for the Pro Bowl, throwing for an impressive 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, though the 49ers lost in the Super Bowl to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Smith pointed out something important, saying, “People might not realize this, but he really knows how to push the ball down the field. If you look at his attempts, completions, and accuracy, he leads those categories in the NFL every year. Some might think he’s just managing the game, but that’s a misconception.”

Purdy accumulated over 3,000 yards the following year but faced a setback last season, throwing for 2,167 yards and 20 touchdowns amidst injuries in the 49ers’ roster. Yet, he managed to lead the team to a playoff win over the Eagles before facing a loss to the Seahawks in the divisional round.
