Mitch Marner achieves NHL record with hat trick as Golden Knights take Game 3 in double overtime

Stanley Cup Final Game 3 Recap

Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final shifted to Las Vegas after the first two games were split in Raleigh, leaving the Golden Knights and the Carolina Hurricanes tied at one game each.

In a bit of excitement, the team brought in a surprise guest to kick off the festivities—Fernando Mendoza, the recent Raiders draft pick and Heisman Trophy winner, played the role of the siren. It was a unique way to start the game.

As the match began, there was an unexpected twist; Golden Knights defenseman Brayden McNabb, who sustained a nasty face injury in the second game, surprisingly took his place in the lineup wearing a full cage. Hockey players, really, they’re built differently.

The first period was a tough, physical grind, ending with a score of 0-0, but Carolina led in shots, 7-2. Just moments into the second period, Las Vegas captain Mark Stone found the net, although the goal was disallowed after Carolina challenged it for offside. Tough call there.

Then Jack Eichel managed to score, but you guessed it—Carolina challenged this one too, claiming interference against their goalie, Frederik Andersen. Ouch. The Golden Knights couldn’t get on the board.

The night’s first penalty came courtesy of the Hurricanes, who had too many players on the ice. It didn’t take long for Tomas Hertl to capitalize on that mistake. Just 16 seconds later, Sean Walker inadvertently scored an own goal, allowing Mitch Marner to put one on the board.

Marner, who’s been on fire this playoff season, completed his hat trick in just 6 minutes and 10 seconds—setting a record. It’s impressive, really. It’s worth mentioning, of course, that own goals aren’t exactly celebrated.

After the second break, Carolina had to switch goalies, bringing in Brando Bussi for his playoff debut. As the third period unfolded, chaos ensued. Sebastian Aho committed a penalty against Marner, leading to a penalty shot for Marner, but he missed. Talk about pressure!

Then the Hurricanes found their footing, scoring their fourth goal with Jordan Martinook, followed swiftly by Taylor Hall snapping one to cut Vegas’ lead to 4-2. To add to the drama, Carolina scored three goals in 39 seconds—setting a record for the fastest three goals in Stanley Cup Finals history. Whoa.

Things escalated when Shea Theodore from Las Vegas threw the puck into the stands, resulting in a power play for Carolina. As if that wasn’t enough, Andrei Svechnikov managed to equalize, sending the game into overtime for the second time in a row.

In overtime, both teams had their chances but couldn’t secure a win. Finally, in the second overtime, Shea Theodore managed to score, solidifying a hectic match and turning it into a thrilling victory for Vegas. Can you imagine the disbelief after such a game? What a rollercoaster!

With the next game set for Tuesday in Las Vegas, it’s sure to draw a crowd. Definitely an appointment viewing!
