CHICAGO — Thunderclap Prepares USMNT for World Cup

The U.S. men’s national team found itself marked by a momentous thunderclap, setting the stage for an exciting month ahead. Sure, the score against Germany—2-1—wasn’t exactly what fans hoped for, but there was an encouraging vibe. The team showed resilience against one of the tournament favorites, and that, perhaps, is a win in itself.

Then came Anthony Robinson’s stunning volley in the 37th minute. It was a breath-taking shot, sending the ball rippling into the net, marking an outstanding effort on the field. If he, or anyone else for that matter, scores a goal like that in the World Cup next week, it could be a defining moment of the tournament.

“I think all the energy was in this shot and that goal,” said USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino, joking about how he cramped up right afterward. “That made Robinson come off in the 61st minute.”

Pochettino added, “It’s vital for players to score goals and build confidence, especially ahead of the World Cup. When Robinson came off, he told me, ‘Coach, I’m just having cramps. It’s okay, it’s okay.’ I said, ‘Let’s take a look.’ He will rest now and prepare for the match against Paraguay.”

Robinson later eased some worries by revealing that he only experienced cramps, although Pochettino seemed a bit cautious. “It’s just a cramp. I hope it’s a cramp,” he reflected, uncertain if there was more to it. I guess that’s just how it goes sometimes, isn’t it?

Robinson is undoubtedly a key player for the team, consistently proving important to the offense. Even after a challenging year with Fulham in the English Premier League, where injuries kept him sidelined until March, Robinson hasn’t lost his magic touch. His goal on Saturday marked his second this season—his first being from a penalty kick.

At this point, the specifics of injuries might not matter much. World Cup aspirations hinge on players like Robinson—those who can create unforgettable moments. That’s precisely what he delivered on Saturday, and it’s the kind of performance the USMNT hopes to see as the World Cup draws closer.

By the way, before the game, they acknowledged members of the USMNT’s 1994 World Cup squad on the field. A nice nod to history, wasn’t it?
