Mayim Bialik Talks About Difficult Experience with GLP-1 Drug
Actress Mayim Bialik recently described her experience with a GLP-1 drug, which she was given to help with weight loss and manage Graves’ disease, as “nightmarish.”
In an essay published on June 5, she reflected on dealing with Graves’ disease. Bialik mentioned being drained by the illness, seeing numerous specialists, and adhering to strict diets and numerous appointments, which left her hoping for what she thought might be a “magical cure.”
Unfortunately, she faced severe gastrointestinal issues, feeling so unwell that she struggled to stand, drink water, or think clearly. “It’s no exaggeration to say I’ve had side effects,” she stated, recounting experiences like uncontrollable diarrhea and sulfuric belching that made her hesitant to speak in public.
Bialik also described the peculiar reactions her body had to the medication. Every time she attempted to eat or drink, she’d end up sneezing, which apparently has a name—sneezing. She experienced cramps, bloating, and body aches, reminiscent of the flu. At one point, she couldn’t manage even a small sip of water without having to rush to the bathroom afterward.
She admitted to attempting the medication more than three times without success. A nurse eventually came to her home to administer an IV, which emphasized how weak she had become. Bialik was taken aback by how unfazed her doctor and the nurse seemed about her severe reaction, prompting her to wonder how a response as serious as hers could be considered normal.
Details regarding the specific GLP-1 drug she was prescribed were not disclosed.
