Survey Reflects Mixed Views on American Identity as 250th Anniversary Approaches

As the nation marks its 250th anniversary, a recent survey reveals some intriguing sentiments among American adults. Only 25% believe that the U.S. outshines any other nation globally, while 44% consider it one of the greatest nations. Interestingly, 30% of respondents feel that other countries surpass the United States in various aspects.

Regarding the concept of the American Dream, a mere 34% of participants think it still represents the potential for progress through hard work. On the flip side, 51% believe this dream is an outdated notion that once held value but has since diminished, with another 15% claiming it was never valid to begin with.

Diverse Opinions Amidst Political Lines

The Associated Press pointed out significant disparities in opinion based on political affiliation. A striking 57% of Republicans view the American Dream as intact, contrasting sharply with just 17% of Democrats who share this belief.

As for President Donald Trump’s approval ratings, they reveal a stark disapproval, sitting at 67%. The breakdown shows that only 33% approve of his performance; among those, 17% strongly approve and 16% somewhat approve. Meanwhile, 70% of respondents disapprove of his economic policies, suggesting a disconnect with the populace.

Context of the Survey

The survey was conducted from April 16 to 20, 2026, with 2,596 adults aged 18 and older participating. The coverage included all 50 states along with Washington, D.C. Notably, the margin of error for the overall results is ±2.6 percentage points. When considering specific party affiliations, the sampling error for Republicans is ±4.3 points, while it’s ±3.8 points for Democrats.
