OpenAI Plans Major Overhaul of ChatGPT
OpenAI is set to significantly revamp its chatbot, aiming to evolve ChatGPT into what it’s calling a “super app.” This upgrade will include coding tools and AI agents that can manage multiple tasks simultaneously for users.
This reassessment follows revelations in April regarding OpenAI’s inability to meet internal revenue and user benchmarks just before a potential IPO this year, raising questions about how it would manage its considerable expenses related to AI.
Based in San Francisco, OpenAI now faces tougher competition from companies like Anthropic Inc., which are vying for lucrative corporate clients, as reported by the Financial Times. Adding to the pressure, Florida Attorney General James Usmayer filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, alleging that the AI company prioritizes profits over safety, leading to harmful outcomes.
Last valued at $850 billion, OpenAI is keen to improve its financial situation ahead of a proposed IPO and chart a clear path towards profitability. Competitors like SpaceX-owned Anthropic and Elon Musk’s xAI also have plans to go public.
The impending transformation of ChatGPT represents the most substantial change since the inception of chatbots in 2022, when they sparked widespread interest in artificial intelligence. OpenAI believes that autonomous agents capable of tasks like scheduling and travel booking could generate more revenue than traditional chatbots.
“Chat is dead,” remarked a senior employee at OpenAI, reflecting a shift in focus.
The upcoming changes are geared toward enhancing OpenAI’s coding product, Codex. This tool allows users to generate and write code based on straightforward instructions. Recently, there has been a realization that OpenAI’s coding capabilities haven’t kept pace with those of competitors like Anthropic’s Claude.
OpenAI intends to revamp ChatGPT’s interface to promote usage of the new functionalities. The goal is to convert free-users into paying customers by guiding them toward valuable products. Reports suggest that new prompts and features will direct users to coding tools, image generation, and partner applications such as Canva and Booking.com.
“We aim to create a personal agent that can assist you with both personal and professional needs,” stated Thibault Sautiaux, the head of core products and platforms at OpenAI. He emphasized that users would be able to connect through phones, desktops, and other devices, even conversing with the agent while driving.
Although most Codex users are paid subscribers, a substantial number of consumers still access ChatGPT for free. Notably, around two million companies contribute to about 40% of OpenAI’s revenue. The expectation is that this figure will rise to 50% by year’s end.
