Apple Enhances Siri and Introduces iOS 27
Apple finally gave Siri a moment to shine.
After much speculation and years of trying to catch up in the AI arena, the tech giant announced iOS 27 during the Worldwide Developers Conference. This update includes new AI features, customization tools, and some pleasant surprises for those still using earlier iPhone models.
The standout news? Siri is getting an upgrade. Or maybe it’s more accurate to say that Siri’s capabilities are finally being enhanced.
The assistant has been revamped using Google’s Gemini technology as part of Apple’s expanding AI strategy, aiming to create a more conversational experience rather than just responding to commands.
The revamped Siri doesn’t just answer questions; it now understands what appears on your screen, remembers your context, and assists with tasks like setting reminders or finding information relative to what you’re viewing.
While users can still activate Siri by pressing the side button, Apple is introducing a dedicated Siri app featuring a chatbot-style interface.
How well it performs in real-world use will be interesting to see when it launches later this year.
However, there’s a catch. Siri AI won’t initially be available in Europe or China due to regulatory issues.
AI is now woven throughout iOS 27, even in areas beyond Siri.
For instance, Messages can suggest replies with just a tap, while Notes and Reminders can generate lists and tasks based on natural language prompts and context.
One notable feature allows users to create custom shortcuts by simply describing what they want in everyday language, eliminating the need for complicated programming.
In simpler terms, users can instruct their iPhone directly about what they want to achieve.
Apple is also increasing its focus on AI-driven photo editing, enabling your photos to undergo impressive modifications.
The updated Photos app features enhanced tools for removing unwanted elements and a new “Spatial Reframe” option that creates different compositions and angles without needing additional photos.
There’s also a feature known as Extend that utilizes AI to fill out the scene around your subject.
Image Playground has been significantly improved, allowing users to produce more realistic AI-generated images—though the extent of your capabilities depends on your iCloud storage plan.
Additionally, the WWDC announcement focused on providing parents with greater control over device usage.
Apple expanded parental controls, offering new screen time tools, updated app permission requests, and additional safety settings for children.
This update continues Apple’s broader initiative to enhance parental oversight regarding how kids use their devices.
Good news for those still holding onto iPhone 11.
Despite concerns that Apple’s 2019 lineup might finally lose software support, the company confirmed that all iPhones starting with the iPhone 11 will be compatible with iOS 27.
This means millions of users can delay hardware upgrades for at least another year.
Apple also introduced new personalization options within its “Liquid Glass” design framework.
New sliders allow users to modify the interface from a nearly transparent appearance to a darker glass effect, providing greater customization of the operating system’s look.
Today’s announcements extended beyond Siri.
Apple revealed that the Health app now includes tracking for menopause and perimenopause cycles, AirPods users can enjoy customizable equalizer controls, and Apple Maps’ Flyover mode is receiving a significant visual upgrade.
Through iOS 27, Apple is broadening the reach of AI-enhanced features across multiple apps and daily activities.
The California-based tech giant stated that iOS 27 will be available this fall alongside new hardware, with developers getting first access through a beta version.
This update marks Apple’s most robust push into AI thus far, and possibly a strong effort to persuade users that a smarter Siri is worth the wait.
