Mayor’s Race in Los Angeles Heads to Runoff
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and her Democratic opponent, Nitya Raman, have moved forward to a runoff election following a competitive primary that caught national attention.
The upcoming general election will see Bass, who has faced criticism yet remains confident in her record, battle against Raman’s progressive agenda that emphasizes government-driven affordability measures.
Voters will have their say in the runoff election scheduled for November 3rd.
Raman, a current member of the Los Angeles City Council and affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America, has been leading the Housing and Homelessness Committee since 2023. She identifies with a Mamdani socialist perspective, named after New York City’s far-left Mayor Zoran Mamdani.
Raman believes the city should focus on more than just homelessness, advocating for increased housing supply, public safety, environmental initiatives, and a cautious stance on federal immigration enforcement.
“We can restore Los Angeles to what it was—a vibrant and hopeful place—but that requires unity and effort,” Raman stated.
Throughout her campaign, she has positioned herself as a refreshing alternative to Bass’s leadership and has criticized independent candidate Spencer Pratt for running a campaign fueled by fear.
Raman remarked, “We have a mayor who hasn’t successfully led this city, while right-wing influences are inciting fear and anger among residents.”
In contrast, Bass, who took office in 2022, argues that her leadership is steering the city positively. She faces ongoing scrutiny over issues like the Palisade fire and rising homelessness, but asserts progress has been made during her tenure.
“Los Angeles is at a tipping point. After years of homelessness, inadequate housing development, and diminishing police presence, I’m committed to changing how City Hall operates,” Bass said.
She continues to advocate that homelessness is decreasing, more housing developments are underway, and the LAPD is actively hiring new officers.
This election cycle has drawn the endorsement of California Governor Gavin Newsom for Bass, who previously won her position by defeating independent challenger Rick J. Caruso with 54.8% of the vote to Caruso’s 45.2% in 2022.
