Trump’s Attendance at Knicks vs. Spurs Game 3 Prompts Increased Security
Major security measures are being implemented for Game 3 of the NBA Finals in New York City, given that Donald Trump is expected to be in attendance. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has voiced his criticism regarding Trump’s visit. The NYPD and Secret Service have established a “freeze zone” around Madison Square Garden, which has resulted in advisories for fans and a no-bag policy. Former FBI agent James Gagliano pointed out that these heightened security measures come in the wake of a recent stabbing at Penn Station.
The preparations at Madison Square Garden reflect the seriousness of President Trump’s upcoming appearance. Even NBA Commissioner Adam Silver acknowledged the potential boost to viewership that Trump’s presence could bring.
However, some players, including Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox and Knicks forward OG Anunoby, don’t seem overly enthusiastic. Fox described the increased security at Madison Square Garden as somewhat bothersome. He remarked, “I think having the president here is just going to be an inconvenience for other people. Obviously, security has been stepped up. We have to send our luggage early; I think our bus is a little faster now.” He also added, “We’re being screened just like TSA. It’s a little bit of an inconvenience for us players, but that’s the reality.”
Fans attending Game 3 will also face additional security checks because of Trump’s visit. Meanwhile, President Trump plans to celebrate his 80th birthday later this week. Anunoby was asked about Trump’s plans, responding straightforwardly, “I think he’s just watching the game. We’re going to play as usual and try to win.”
The president’s presence is indeed polarizing, raising questions about which NBA players might support his attendance. Some believe his being there should be seen as an honor. Notably, Spurs player Victor Wembanyama made headlines by standing with his arms folded during the national anthem before Game 1, but Trump refrained from critiquing that moment.
Trump commented positively on Wembanyama, saying, “Wenby is a great player. I say, ‘How do we protect this guy?’” Knicks guard Josh Hart, who has been vocal about his opinions—previously tweeting, “Yes, yes!!!!! Get that dumbass Trump out of the White House!”—has not publicly addressed Trump’s imminent attendance.
The Knicks come into Game 3 leading the series 2-0, a promising position historically linked to an almost 87% chance of winning the championship when a team leads 2-0 in the NBA Finals.
