A Texas teenager, Carmelo Anthony, reportedly looked “distraught” right after allegedly fatally stabbing fellow student Austin Metcalf, according to a witness’s statements during the murder trial on Monday.
On April 2, 2025, a teammate of Anthony, 17, described a scene filled with “chaos” at a track meet in Frisco, where an argument between Anthony and Metcalf over seating escalated to the stabbing.
This unnamed student, who had to keep his identity private because of his age, recounted seeing Anthony at the team tent of rival Frisco Memorial High School at the moment things took a turn. The account, reported by local NBC 5 DFW, suggested that a confrontation erupted as he noticed Anthony getting pushed.
The witness detailed how the situation quickly spiraled out of control, recalling Metcalf lifting his shirt to reveal he had been stabbed while Anthony reportedly took off running. He described Anthony as “distraught” and crying, receiving comfort from a coach but apparently telling him, “not to touch me.”
Interestingly, the student mentioned that he wasn’t sure if Metcalf was justified in pushing Anthony or if Anthony had any reason to stab Metcalf. This ambiguity adds another layer to the unfolding narrative.
In defense of Anthony, his attorney claimed that Metcalf had initiated the altercation, insisting that Anthony acted in self-defense. Jurors heard that, prior to the incident, Metcalf had asked Anthony multiple times to vacate the team tent.
Another testimony revealed that, prior to the stabbing, Metcalf had shoved Anthony, leading Anthony to pull out a semi-serrated knife from his bag and stab Metcalf once, which ultimately proved fatal.
Howard, Anthony’s attorney, painted Metcalf as the aggressor, describing him as towering over Anthony, who was relatively smaller in stature. He maintained that Anthony was simply seeking shelter from the elements since the team lacked a tent and did not intend to harm anyone.
Anthony, now 19, has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and if convicted, he could face a life sentence in prison. Testimony wrapped up on Monday, but Anthony chose not to testify on his own behalf.
