Karl-Anthony Towns Faces Challenges in NBA Finals
Karl-Anthony Towns’ impressive performance in the NBA Finals has hit a snag.
All of a sudden, he found himself less involved in the game.
Towns has recorded only 11 shot attempts and two assists over the last five quarters, and now the Knicks’ journey toward their first championship in 53 years feels uncertain.
The Knicks experienced a setback on Monday night, losing 115-111 to the Spurs, thus ending their franchise-record playoff winning streak at 13 games.
Coach Mike Brown commented, “That was the way we played and what we were doing offensively. We came down and, to be honest, it felt like we just played ‘Drugs.’ After getting the first screen, we stood around and watched.”
He continued, “There was no movement. Sometimes KAT needs to flush to the elbow or post up. They just seemed to falter, and it’s like they were ruining the game. You can call a play, but sometimes you’ve got to just move, cut, and pass the ball quicker.” Brown pointed out that the team struggled to attack effectively, possibly due to their opponent’s zone defense.
In Game 2, Towns had been limited to 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting but surprisingly had taken just one shot.
Throughout the playoffs, the Knicks have capitalized on Towns’ skills as both a scorer and playmaker. He delivered a solid Game 1 performance with 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 assists. However, after encountering foul trouble during Game 2 against the Monsters, his performance has dipped.
Brown expressed concern that Towns’ recent lack of involvement highlighted a broader issue for the Knicks: they seemed to hesitate and relied too heavily on individual talent rather than teamwork.
“It felt like we just wanted to stand there and watch one player dribble excessively. When the ball was passed, the player receiving it hesitated instead of making quick decisions,” Brown observed. “We haven’t been executing plays effectively, especially with their physical defensive style. It’s a team issue, not just Towns’ problem.”
“We need to be smarter. We have to take care of the ball, maintain proper spacing, and move quickly. Tonight, we fell short on these counts,” he added.
