Maine GOP official describes Graham Platner's policies as 'very harmful'

Concerns Over Democratic Senate Candidate in Maine

LEWISTON, Maine – With Maine voters preparing to cast their ballots for Democratic U.S. Senate candidates on Tuesday, a local Republican lawmaker emphasized the significance of Graham Platner’s policies amid the controversies surrounding him.

“His personal life is quite complicated, isn’t it?” Maine Republican state Rep. Laurel Libby mentioned in an interview. “There have been numerous scandals. Yet, what I find really concerning are the policies he’s pushing forward.”

Libby, who represents the 90th House District encompassing parts of Minot and Auburn, voiced particular alarm over Platner’s backing of the Green New Deal, a significant legislative proposal expected to burden taxpayers with massive costs while phasing out fossil fuel production.

“These extreme environmental policies have already caused our state’s electricity prices to soar for the past eight years under Democratic leadership,” Libby stated. “If such policies are adopted in Washington, D.C., it won’t just hurt Maine—American families and workers across the board will feel the impact too.”

Despite the controversies surrounding him, Libby remarked that the Democratic establishment is likely to nominate Platner, which she attributes to the party’s control over the state’s governor’s office and legislature.

“We’ve seen 32 new taxes and tax hikes that have collectively driven up the cost of living. Now, Platner aims to bring those same ideologies to Congress, which will harm not just Mainers but individuals nationwide. We can’t let him into the Senate; his stance is quite perilous,” Libby added.

Even as Platner maintains favorable polling despite his polarizing views, Libby believes that many voters are misled into thinking that state policies have nothing to do with the rising cost of living, when in reality, they do.

Libby expressed concern for the struggles Mainers face, acknowledging that rising costs are making it increasingly difficult to live and work in the state. “Many are searching for a solution, and some think they’ve found one in Graham Platner, but that’s just misguided,” she said.

“He’ll only push the same extreme measures that are already causing us difficulties—elevating our bills and taxes. If his policies reach D.C., the consequences for Maine will likely become even more severe,” Libby warned.

Fox News Digital reached out to Platner for comments.

As for the primary race, Platner is widely expected to emerge as the Democratic candidate against Republican incumbent Sen. Susan Collins in the upcoming November election. Libby, who is not seeking re-election, has recently initiated Lead Maine, a group aimed at equipping voters with better resources to support conservative leadership in the state.

“We want to educate, engage, and empower Mainers to drive the change they wish to see in our state,” Libby emphasized. “That doesn’t mean electing extreme figures like Graham Platner to the Senate; rather, it’s about ensuring that Mainers recognize the local government’s direct impact on our lives.”
