Controversial Issues Surround Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner
Liberal activists backing Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate for the Senate from Maine, have acknowledged that some contentious topics—like his tattoos associated with Nazi imagery—were overlooked during their vetting process.
During an interview with the Wall Street Journal, activist Aaron Zitner spoke with Daniel Morav, Leanne Huang, and Morris Katz, who were instrumental in selecting Platner to challenge incumbent Senator Susan Collins in the upcoming 2026 elections. Zitner inquired about the scrutiny that Platner underwent prior to this endorsement.
Morav mentioned, “We invested significant resources in a reputable firm and received varied feedback. Some information was familiar, while other aspects were surprising.” This raises questions about how thorough their review truly was.
Backlash Over Military ‘Culture’ Comments
Platner has faced criticism for attributing his tattoos, which have Nazi connections, to the “culture” within the military. This has sparked outrage among some Republican veterans.
Zitner pressed further, asking if any revealing tattoos came to light during the investigation. Morav flatly stated, “No.” When questioned about Platner’s degrading comments about women and mocking remarks about U.S. soldiers that appeared on Reddit, Morav acknowledged some posts were flagged but admitted, “Not everything was included.” Yet, he insisted that Platner’s past shouldn’t disqualify him from a Senate position.
Defending Platner’s Candidacy
Katz defended Platner too, suggesting he offers a refreshing alternative to the current political establishment. He expressed concern that sticking to traditional strategies has only resulted in Democratic losses, including the House and Senate.
“Continuing on the same path could be the biggest gamble for Democrats,” Katz remarked, highlighting that merely adjusting existing strategies won’t lead to the required improvements. He suggested running someone like Platner might be a less risky approach compared to any old methods.
Scandals and Denials
Further complicating matters, Zitner reported that allegations surfaced against Platner, including claims of inappropriate messages sent to women during his marriage. This has added to the list of controversies swirling around his campaign.
In addressing these concerns, Morav implied it’s ultimately up to the people of Maine to make their decision. The tension surrounding Platner’s candidacy reflects a complex mix of loyalty, strategy, and the weight of public perception.
