Idris Elba: A Black James Bond was never a 'realistic' option

Idris Elba Addresses James Bond Rumors

Idris Elba, often speculated to be the next James Bond, has finally spoken out about the ongoing rumors. In a recent GQ interview, he expressed his discomfort with long discussions about the future of the iconic role.

At 53, Elba tackled the speculation that he would become the first Black 007, succeeding Daniel Craig. He remarked, “It was never legal. It was always just a rumor,” emphasizing that fans seemed to have taken the gossip at face value.

Insights on Bond’s Legacy

Elba, whose parents hail from Ghana and Sierra Leone, noted that the narrative around Bond, a character defined historically by his white Anglo-Saxon heritage, is significant. “I always felt that wasn’t realistic,” he said, while also acknowledging the compliment behind the speculation.

He further mentioned that in some markets, the idea of a Black Bond isn’t well received. “Bonds are big all over the world. Not all audiences would choose a Black man, or an African man, to play Bond. It’s not something that is preferred in their culture,” he added.

Despite this, Elba did not dismiss the idea of a modernized Bond but stressed a clear line against anything he deems “woke.”

The Nature of Bond

In his conversation with the magazine, Elba shared, “Bond is so unrealistic that it’s good to hint at reality, but don’t try to wake him up.” The actor underscored the importance of maintaining escapism in the character, suggesting not to bend Bond to fit public tastes.

Elba isn’t alone in this sentiment. Last year, Helen Mirren, during an interview with former Bond actor Pierce Brosnan, asserted that James Bond “has to be a man.” Brosnan, who portrayed Bond in four films, hinted back in September 2019 about the need to respect the character’s established identity.

Changing Perspectives

Looking back, much of the advocacy for changing Bond’s gender and ethnicity seems to originate from previous actors in the role. For instance, Daniel Craig, shortly after starting his Bond journey in 2006, suggested that the next actor could very well be Black. After Barack Obama’s election, Craig stated, “If we can have a Black president of the United States, we can also have a Black James Bond.”

Craig’s lengthy tenure as Bond rapidly came to a close, with the most recent individual to play 007 being Irish actor Patrick Gibson, voicing the character in an upcoming video game.
