Man from Sudan Taken into Custody After Failed Beheading Attempt in Belfast

Suspect Arrested in Belfast Attempted Murder Case

Police have apprehended a Sudanese man on suspicion of attempted murder following an incident described as an attempted beheading on a Belfast street.

Update: Police have clarified that the arrested individual is Sudanese, not Somali.

Initially, the PSNI referred to the suspect as potentially being Somali, but this has since been updated in a new statement confirming that he is a Sudanese national. They mentioned that more information would be released soon, attributing this to a “quick investigation.”

There’s also an update regarding the victim; authorities confirmed that he is in critical condition and currently hospitalized. They mentioned “inaccurate online postings” about his health but didn’t provide additional details.

The individual arrested for attempted murder related to a brutal assault late Monday in Belfast has been described as being in his 30s. Initially, police thought he appeared to be Somali, but the identification has changed. The attack took place around 10:30 p.m. on Kinnaird Street.

The victim, a man in his 40s whose identity remains undisclosed, was reported to have serious injuries affecting his face, neck, and back.

Following the assault, the PSNI labeled the incident serious and indicated that an investigation was in motion to determine the underlying motive. A spokesperson emphasized the community’s concern and confirmed that the safety of the area is a priority. They are collaborating with local representatives to foster reassurance and support.

Officers quickly arrived at the scene, and a spokesperson expressed appreciation for members of the public who courageously intervened to assist the victim. Their readiness to help is reflective of admirable community spirit.

The police are aware of recordings of the attack that surfaced on social media and have urged individuals not to share the footage, as it could interfere with ongoing investigations.

The graphic video, too disturbing to be shared, reportedly shows an individual with a knife attacking another man on the ground. Bystanders attempted to intervene, with one calling out for assistance while others rushed to help.

A knife was located at the scene, as previously noted.

The PSNI’s quick identification of the suspect as Sudanese followed comments from Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who urged authorities to disclose information about the attack promptly. He stated that the incident was horrifying and emphasized the public’s right to know the truth, criticizing police for their lack of transparency, which leaves the community anxious.
