Collins Avoids Comment on Platner’s Sexting Controversy

Senator Susan Collins from Maine has chosen not to engage with the ongoing sexting scandal involving Democratic candidate Graham Platner, especially as the state prepares for its voting day on Tuesday. When approached for her thoughts, Collins stated, “I really don’t have anything to add,” clearly distancing herself from the developing situation.

Despite further inquiries, she maintained her stance, opting not to discuss the allegations surrounding Platner, who is the Democratic frontrunner for the coming elections. This period has seen increasing scrutiny of Platner, and Collins has not contributed to the conversation as Republican criticisms ramp up in light of the unfolding scandal.

Collins had previously criticized Platner for mocking injured U.S. soldiers, calling it “never appropriate.” She seemed to take a more active stance then, but recently has not made any remarks on the current controversy stemming from Platner’s past relationship.

Interestingly, while some Republicans are spotlighting this issue to galvanize their campaign efforts, Collins herself has opted for silence. Outside organizations supportive of her have initiated advertisements condemning the Maine Democratic Party, yet Collins has refrained from vocalizing a public stance. This hesitance comes just as Platner is expected to challenge her in the November elections.

Democratic insiders are positioning themselves differently with respect to the scandal. Despite new controversies emerging, party leaders continue to support Platner, even endorsing him formally. This could indicate a rift in strategy between the parties. As the pressure mounts, Democrats focus on Collins’ voting records while asserting that flipping the seat remains a key objective, irrespective of allegations against Platner.

With recent polling days away, Maine voters will confront a significant choice in this contentious Senate race, pitting Collins against Platner, who must navigate the challenges posed by his past as he campaigns.
