A single word that can enable you to use technology without being controlled by it

Technology and Its Influence

While I wouldn’t label myself a “technology writer,” I find myself discussing technology quite often. I’m not opposed to the next big breakthrough in AI or the latest iPads that might drop soon. Whether we’ll see a new iPad in Q3? Honestly, I have no idea. That’s not really my area of expertise.

Yet, I frequently ponder the impact of technology on our lives. It’s fascinating—and sometimes unsettling—how it changes the way we live and think.

Similar Yet Unique

This is a distinctly 21st-century concern. The pace at which technology, especially digital tech, has evolved in recent years is astounding. And it doesn’t seem to be letting up anytime soon.

But, let’s not forget: technology predates the digital age. Cars? Technology. Washing machines? Definitely. Think about old inventions like printing presses and mechanical clocks. Technology has been evolving for ages, consistently transforming the landscape.

We’re now in a post-assembly-line era. Honestly, “assembly line” sounds a bit dry, right? Similarly, the Industrial Revolution is something we learned about in school and promptly moved on from.

Yet, at the time, both concepts were incredibly revolutionary. They fundamentally altered the way people worked and shifted societal norms. Much of the turmoil in the 20th century can be traced back to the chaos stirred by the Industrial Revolution itself.

Trains modified travel, the printing press redefined education, the telephone bridged distances, radio created mass communication, and television shifted our focus away from reading. Even something as mundane as the washing machine contributed to social changes in the 1960s.

Endless Consumption

In this manner, the era of AI isn’t far removed from the age of steam. Still, it feels uniquely distinct and deeply immersive—more consuming than any tech revolution that has come before.

In a world where we’re nearly always connected, the potential for constant distraction and worry has reached new heights. It poses challenges for anyone trying to lead a balanced life, which might be hard for our predecessors to grasp.

Some people react by wanting to reject it all. Others dive headfirst into every new technology, almost like a dog eagerly lapping up water. Neither of those extremes seems quite right. The allure of radical solutions often lies in their simplicity: choose one direction or the other and stick with it.

But surely moderation is the more sensible approach, even if it’s not the most thrilling or visually appealing. In a landscape oversaturated with technology, striking the right balance becomes crucial.

Finding Balance

What we need is intentionality in our tech usage. It really boils down to being mindful—”intentional” being the key term here. A lot of the issues surrounding technology stem from using it reflexively, almost habitually.

We often default to things like “just use my phone” or “just scroll through social media.” At its core, there’s nothing morally wrong with this, so we often justify consuming more and more content without thinking.

That’s not being intentional, though. It can quickly lead to relinquishing our autonomy to algorithms. As gamers say, players risk becoming non-player characters—just part of the background.

Good Intentions

Being intentional means asking ourselves whether we could handle something without digital assistance before relying on it. It means checking if we actually enjoy using a specific app or service. If we don’t, maybe it’s time to rethink our choices.

Being purposeful with technology allows for periods away from it, helping us reconnect with our humanity. It’s about finding a middle ground between practicality and mindfulness. Balancing the frenetic pace of the modern world while preserving the essence of human interaction is key.

Mindful usage isn’t about making everyone’s tech choices identical. People’s needs and preferences differ greatly, and that’s completely normal.

The crucial element? Intent. Without intent, we’d merely be drifting along, at the mercy of technological advances. The complexities of the 21st century urge us to reflect on fundamental questions: Who are we, and who do we wish to be?
