Uzbekistan National Team Faces Strange Security Measures in the U.S.
The Uzbekistan national football team’s arrival in America was anything but smooth.
On Monday, as they prepared for a friendly against the Netherlands at Randals Island, the team stepped off their bus only to be met by unexpected security protocols.
Rather than the anticipated warm reception from supporters and staff, they encountered a security guard armed with a cane, ready to conduct thorough searches.
One team member was visibly perplexed by the unusual scene while exiting the vehicle.
As the security checks continued, every player and piece of equipment was meticulously inspected.
Interestingly, they weren’t alone in experiencing these stringent checks. Senegal’s team, upon their arrival at training camp, also underwent examinations right on the tarmac.
Eventually, Uzbekistan made their way into the stadium to prepare for their pivotal match, which marked their last before the World Cup.
Facing a top-10 opponent like the Netherlands, the game concluded with more questions for the Dutch side than answers.
Although the Netherlands secured a 2-1 victory, it’s notable that neither of their goals was scored during open play, both coming from penalties instead.
Uzbekistan managed to match that scoreline, too.
Igor Sergeev netted a late equalizer in the dying moments, but a penalty awarded in the final seconds ultimately dictated their fate.
Yet, it was a commendable effort for the players, marking their World Cup debut.
Uzbekistan placed second in their group in the third round of the AFC qualifiers, earning a spot in the World Cup.
They’ll be competing in Group K, alongside teams from Colombia, Portugal, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Their campaign kicks off against Colombia on June 17th.
