President Trump Supports Voter ID Legislation in Ohio
President Donald Trump is advocating for the implementation of voter identification in Ohio. He is backing a joint resolution that the Ohio Senate recently passed and is encouraging the House of Representatives to approve the bill.
Trump shared his thoughts on Truth Social, congratulating the Senate for passing Senate Joint Resolution 10. He suggested that the opposition from Democrats might be aimed at facilitating electoral fraud.
He added, “I am now asking all of my Republican friends in the state Legislature to pass this now and put this constitutional amendment on the ballot so the great people of Ohio can vote to enshrine voter ID in our state constitution. I have been following this resolution closely and strongly support it.”
The resolution, which passed in the Senate, is set to be introduced in the Ohio House of Representatives. If both chambers agree, it will be presented to voters in Ohio.
The proposed bill stipulates that voters must present photo identification when voting in person, with certain exceptions for religious objections.
Starting in 2023, voters will need to show ID on election day. The aim here is to formalize voter ID requirements within the state constitution.
The Senate passed the bill with a 22-9 vote, showing a clear partisan divide; no Democrats supported it, and only one Republican voted against it. That dissenting voice came from Sen. Al Cutrona of Canfield.
Trump’s support for this resolution comes as he persistently pushes for the SAVE America Act at the federal level, which would require proof of citizenship and photo identification to vote.
