LIV Golf’s Future in Question Amid Funding Cuts
Scott O’Neal, the CEO of LIV Golf, faced some tough questions about the league’s future recently. With uncertainty swirling around, he chose to stick to the basics of the company’s strategy rather than dive into the rumors.
Despite the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) announcing it would stop funding breakaway circuits after the 2026 season, there’s an expectation that the current season will wrap up as planned. LIV Golf only has four events left on its calendar this year, and some believe those will proceed without issues.
However, an executive from LIV Golf’s main partner warned that “all remaining tournaments are in jeopardy,” raising concerns about whether or not the funding from PIF would continue.
Reports suggest that LIV Golf may run out of financial backing before the end of the 2026 season, especially with Saudi Arabia’s funding expected to halt. O’Neal’s remarks came just days after these alarming reports started making waves.
When asked if he could guarantee the remaining events would happen as scheduled, O’Neal responded, “I would say they’ve been a great partner so far,” highlighting PIF’s support throughout the season. He also maintained that the league was pushing forward with a solid team. Yet, interestingly, he didn’t provide a specific commitment about the events going ahead.
O’Neal’s avoidance of direct questions only fueled speculation about the league’s future. His concluding remark was that investing in the business would yield substantial returns—a rather vague assurance.
As discussions around LIV continue, particularly with its next event not happening until late July in the UK, there’s ample time for more rumors and uncertainty to emerge.
Notably, PIF has reportedly invested over $1 billion into LIV Golf in previous years, with a projected total investment reaching $6 billion by the close of 2026. However, the kingdom’s financial injection into the league ceased just a few years after its inaugural tournament in London, marking a significant shift in support for the breakaway league.
