Incident at Tucson Airport Involving Sheriff Chris Nanos
Video obtained through a public records request shows Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos being stopped for bringing an undeclared handgun to a TSA checkpoint at Tucson International Airport. This occurred prior to his trip to Laguna Beach, California.
The TSA permits active-duty law enforcement officers to fly armed as long as they adhere to federal guidelines and inform airlines ahead of time. However, there have been complaints suggesting that Nanos was treated more leniently than an average traveler would be.
The footage, recorded in November 2024, was released shortly after Pima County deputies arrested three YouTubers for allegedly creating a public nuisance in the neighborhood of Nancy Guthrie, stirring First Amendment discussions.
Background on the Arrests Near Nancy Guthrie’s Home
The three individuals arrested included Alex Zabel, known online as “Criminal Network,” Troy Bradshaw, also referred to as “DAA JUICE,” and Damian Engdahl, who operates the 857 Tucson channel.
While Nanos missed his flight, he wasn’t charged with any crime. In contrast, Zabel and Bradshaw were briefly jailed, and Engdahl received a summons.
Engdahl expressed frustration, mentioning how the sheriff seems to target YouTubers while serious issues, like homelessness and drug problems, are overlooked in the area.
Latest Updates on the Case Involving Nancy Guthrie
In conjunction with his duties, Sheriff Nanos mentioned that the department is increasing efforts to address complaints from residents regarding disturbances. Following the revelations from the video evidence, including a person urinating behind a tent, he asserted a need for stronger enforcement of the law.
Meanwhile, the three YouTubers have received misdemeanor public nuisance charges, and Zabel is also facing an obstructing a road charge. Local authorities have stated that first-time offenders in Guthrie’s neighborhood will now be publicly named, and repeat offenders could face jail time.
Dr. Matt Heintz, from the Pima County Board of Supervisors, commented on the ongoing disturbances in the neighborhood, voicing concerns about the lingering impacts on residents.
While the sheriff’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comments regarding the incidents, there is an ongoing prohibition against media parking in the area after numerous news vehicles flooded it for weeks. Local resident Cory Stevens pointed out that civilians would likely face harsher consequences in a similar situation.
On the day of the TSA incident, Nanos explained that he had stayed at a hotel because it was election night, and, wanting to avoid leaving his service weapon in his vehicle, he instead placed it in his bag. The officers allowed him to retrieve his gun after determining it was an accident.
Despite the hiccup, Nanos eventually took another flight to California. This incident has reignited discussions about accountability and fairness in law enforcement practices, particularly regarding how officers are treated compared to civilians.
Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, remains a focal point in ongoing investigations, as her kidnapping case continues to go unsolved, with a substantial reward being offered for any helpful information.
