Poll Reveals Diverging Moral Views Among Americans
A recent Gallup poll indicated that a significant number of Democrats view changing gender and abortion as morally acceptable. The survey explored Americans’ attitudes toward 20 different behaviors, including out-of-wedlock births, pornography, physician-assisted suicide, and abortion.
Overall, a majority of Americans find practices such as divorce (74%), premarital sex (65%), and same-sex relationships (62%) to be morally permissible. Interestingly, more individuals disapprove of medical testing on animals than of abortion, with only 41% deeming abortion unacceptable. Furthermore, 57% of respondents believe that changing gender is morally wrong.
The poll highlighted a pronounced partisan divide in views on morality, particularly between Republicans and Democrats. For instance, 73% of Democrats regard abortion as acceptable, while just 18% of Republicans share that sentiment. Similarly, 60% of Democrats accept gender changes, despite biological constraints, compared to a mere 5% of Republicans.
Moreover, many Democrats (81%) endorse same-sex relationships, contrasting with 35% of Republicans. A majority also supports teenage sexual activity (54% of Democrats versus 6% of Republicans) and premarital sex (86% of Democrats compared to 46% of Republicans). In terms of pornography, 47% of Democrats view it as acceptable, while only 19% of Republicans do.
According to Gallup, for 14 of the 20 behaviors assessed, Democrats were much more likely than Republicans to find them morally acceptable, with notable differences. There is a 55-point disparity in attitudes toward abortion and gender reassignment, and a 46-point gap regarding same-sex relationships. Other behaviors like physician-assisted suicide and pornography also showcased significant partisan divides.
Conversely, Republicans were more inclined than Democrats to accept three specific behaviors: the death penalty (with a 43-point difference), wearing animal fur (23 points), and medical testing on animals (8 points).
The opinions expressed by Democrats about moral acceptability align closely with their political beliefs. Ironically, while many Democrats consider abortion morally acceptable, only 43% believe that animal testing is acceptable. This points to a complex contradiction regarding the value placed on life and compassion often invoked in discussions around immigration policies.
The survey was conducted from May 1 to 17, 2026.
