Horse racing world mourns Kyle Busch: ‘Hard to understand’
Tragically, Kyle Busch, a two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, has died unexpectedly at the age of 41. The motorsport community is reeling from this shocking news. Busch, known for his intense competitive drive, has left a lasting impact on racing and is survived by his wife, Samantha, and their two children. Colleagues remember him as both a skilled driver and a genuinely nice person.
In a heart-wrenching moment, Brexton Busch, Kyle’s 11-year-old son, faced disappointment during his return to racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He initially led the Summer Shootout but lost the lead to Landon Thrasher right before the finish line. This was Brexton’s first race since his father’s passing just days before he was set to compete in the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte.
Kyle Busch, who died on May 21 after suffering from pneumonia that led to sepsis, had collapsed during a simulator session the previous Wednesday. He was rushed to the hospital but passed away the next day.
The Busch family—Brexton, Samantha, and sister Lennix—were honored at an emotional pre-race ceremony last month, marking their first public appearance since Kyle’s death until Brexton returned for practice before Tuesday’s race.
Kyle Busch’s father also leads laps
What a notable pass by Landon Thrasher! I hadn’t heard of him before last night, but that was impressive. Sure, it cut short what could’ve been a touching story—racing can be tough like that. Kyle would have definitely told Brexton about it a thousand times.
However, it seems Brexton has the talent to thrive in racing. This kid has a knack for driving and will likely be seen in NASCAR soon.
Richard Childress seems to be getting things ready to step in if needed, having announced that Busch’s No. 8 jersey will stay retired unless Brexton decides to use it. For viewers, Brexton can compete in the Truck Series once he turns 16, though he’ll have to wait until he’s 18 for the Cup series.
The team confirmed, “The No. 8 is reserved and will be available for Brexton when he’s ready for NASCAR races.”
Brexton has shown promise over the years. Kyle often spent racing seasons chasing after him during the week. Samantha, active on social media, has documented both Kyle and Brexton’s racing careers. Earlier this year, Brexton even raced against his father at the Tulsa Shootout.
The Busch family appears to be made for the sport. Kyle won the Cup twice, while his brother Kurt won it in 2004. Brexton is certainly on the same path. Interestingly, even Kyle’s father, Tom Busch, led a lap recently.
It’s quite heartwarming to see Brexton Busch back behind the wheel.
