Is Michael Rapaport considering a challenge against NYC Mayor Mamdani?

Spencer Pratt vs. Michael Rapaport for Mayor?

Spencer Pratt, known from reality television, is catching attention as he attempts to challenge Mayor Karen Bass for leadership of Los Angeles.

While Pratt is building a “Family Man” image, Rapaport thrives amidst social media controversies.

Pratt’s movement seems to resonate across the country. Despite his effort, Los Angeles’ unusual voting process placed him in third, but another actor in the race might just take his spot.

Has Pratt paved the way for Michael Rapaport to step up?

A “Soft Launch”

Rapaport has been a familiar presence in both films and television since appearing in the 1992 movie “Zebrahead.” Recently, he participated in the Peacock reality series “The Traitors,” where his outspoken character stirred things up, leaving some viewers divided.

As he shared with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year, this show was a strategic move: a “soft launch” aimed at unseating Zoran Mamdani as New York City’s mayor.

“If you can have a mayor of New York who doesn’t exactly have a spotless past…at least I demonstrated, especially on ‘Traitors,’ that I can be straightforward and people can have an honest mayor.”

Pratt, on the other hand, did not lean into MAGA rhetoric or Republican platforms during his campaign. Instead, he portrayed an outsider persona, inspired by losing his home to the Palisades fire and seeking accountability from the responsible party.

For Rapaport, however, the real motivation stemmed from his criticism of Mamdani’s socialist policies and his perceived antagonism toward Jewish New Yorkers, rather than simply Republican support.

Accidental Politicians

Both could be considered “accidental politicians.” As Rapaport mentioned to Fox News about his unexpected candidacy, “I never imagined I’d even be contemplating a run for mayor. I intend to do this with good intentions.”

He may lean left, yet he has often pushed back against some party viewpoints, particularly regarding Israel.

Pratt and Rapaport seem to have a mutual understanding of media dynamics. Both have spent years in front of cameras, recognizing how video content can serve their objectives.

Pratt has effectively utilized viral campaign videos, embodying the relatable Everyman looking to redeem his hometown. Rapaport, who has a comic background, might tap into similar strategies.

Despite his late entry into the race, Rapaport has several advantages. He announced his candidacy well ahead of the vote, allowing him to cultivate support, criticize Mamdani continuously, and showcase his vision for what a democratic socialist could achieve in New York.

He’s hopeful he won’t regret his decisions in the end.

Sharp Elbows

Furthermore, Rapaport isn’t merely a reality TV antagonist; he has also left a mark with memorable roles in films like “Beautiful Girls,” “True Romance,” and “Cop Land,” along with shows like FX’s “Justified” and Netflix’s “Atypical.”

The seasoned actor has recently re-entered the comedic scene, performing stand-up across the nation, showcasing his charismatic style.

But are there risks for him, besides the potential label of just another actor turned political savior? Rapaport is known for his direct style online and on his podcasts. He even took on Trump a few years back, which might play to his advantage in New York.

However, after October 7, he reevaluated Trump and the narrative surrounding the policies, indicating growth, though this might not resonate well in a predominately blue city.

Enjoying the Battle

While Pratt is focused on family-oriented appeal, Rapaport seeks out lively debates across all social media platforms, diving into sports, culture, and politics.

On his “I Am Rapaport: Stereo Podcast,” he shares thoughts on various topics, like the New York Knicks and free speech. Meanwhile, Mamdani’s team might be sifting through past episodes to uncover questionable content.

In what is shaping up to be an intense race, even if Pratt remains in third place, he has undoubtedly generated enough concern within the Democratic establishment.

Can Rapaport take cues from Pratt’s bold campaign and craft his own Hollywood narrative?
