Freddie, the Celebrating Tourist
A European tourist known as “Freddie” might just be doing more to honor the upcoming 250th anniversary of America than most Americans, myself included.
Freddie, a German soccer enthusiast, traveled to the U.S. specifically to catch the national team in the FIFA World Cup. His road trip through the South has captivated many online, especially his excitement for classic American spots like Waffle House and local gas stations, as well as the experience of college football. Some Twitter users even liken him to a living embodiment of the “The European mind cannot understand this” meme.
He has explored states like Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama, walking along the Chattahoochee River and immersing himself in the atmosphere at Auburn’s football stadium. To his surprise, he also stumbled across a German-style village in northern Georgia.

This is the most “incomprehensible” moment in my life. One of my friends said, “If you hit me five times tomorrow, you’ll think this isn’t real.” pic.twitter.com/FWYOY8iyDF

Freddie also experienced the Southern hospitality, noting how friendly and generous Americans can be. For instance, when he and his friends were faced with a rainy walk to the stadium, the hotel receptionist offered them a ride instead.
I love Americans. We were about to walk an hour to the stadium in the rain to save on an Uber, and the receptionist at the hotel we had parked in front of decided to give us a ride. 🙏 pic.twitter.com/ta9crNM0ok

Given the recent back-and-forth jabs between American hosts and their European visitors, Freddie’s cheerful posts are like a refreshing splash of cold water on a hot day. Social media, particularly Twitter, often feels like a hub for snarky comments and negativity regarding the U.S. and its future. Watching Europeans rediscover simple pleasures—things many of us take for granted—provides a much-needed perspective boost.
Honestly, it’s quite uplifting. His posts enhance my appreciation for the American South and its culture. I realize it’s been a while since my last visit to Waffle House, and now I’m thinking about planning my own pilgrimage this summer. I think Freddie’s journey has shown me just how special America’s 250th anniversary can be, reminding me to recognize the charm right before my eyes.
