Vikings’ Quarterback Situation: A Complex Outlook for 2026
The Minnesota Vikings are, perhaps, one of the more perplexing teams as we consider the upcoming 2026 NFL season.
Given my recent rankings in the NFL Power Rankings, I have my doubts. Yet, there’s a case to be made that we might be underestimating what’s happening in Minnesota, particularly concerning the quarterback situation. My friend James Deiter pointed out that if the Vikings can obtain at least average performance from their quarterback, they might surpass expectations.
Undoubtedly, the quarterback position is a critical issue for the team this summer.
This offseason, Minnesota brought in veteran Kyler Murray, who is now vying for the starting role against young talent JJ McCarthy. It seems we’re in for a genuine competition for the QB spot. As Hub Arkush, an NFL writer, mentioned in a recent podcast, those familiar with the situation believe Coach Kevin O’Connell wants the battle to continue right up until the end of summer.
Murray’s presence isn’t solely due to his experience, nor is McCarthy there just because of his first-round pick status.
However, having both quarterbacks in contention doesn’t necessarily mean they’re comfortable with the dynamic.
Take McCarthy, for instance. His comments during Minnesota’s OTAs in late May were, well, a bit awkward.
He described the situation, saying, “It’s like there are two guys in the classroom. He sits on one side and I sit on the other side. And it’s the coach’s responsibility to teach and guide us.” It was certainly an interesting analogy.
Yet, when pressed about any “awkwardness,” McCarthy tried to downplay it, likening it to being in high school, sitting across from someone in the classroom. “I wouldn’t say it’s awkward,” he insisted.
This contrasted sharply with Murray’s earlier statement, where he expressed his intention to “help” McCarthy as much as he could.
“I know he’s younger, so any way I can help him, of course… I’m going to give him the knowledge he needs,” Murray had said. “I know we’re both competitors and we both want what’s best for the team.”
However, during a Minnesota minicamp on Tuesday, it seemed Murray faced some awkwardness of his own.
When asked about the most challenging adjustment he had encountered since joining the Vikings, he remarked on the lack of “reps” in practice. It’s notable that when Murray did get his chances during practice on Tuesday, his performance wasn’t exactly flawless.
