Gotham FC’s New Training Facility Plans

Gotham FC is set to embark on an exciting new venture. The current NWSL Champions are transforming the former Red Bull New York Training Center into their very own advanced training facility in Whippany, New Jersey. This development spans 27,000 square feet and will feature three turf fields (including one heated), a full-size indoor field, a gym covering 3,000 square feet, a hydrotherapy room, a recovery space with a lounge, and a dining area for players.

Carolyn Tisch Blodgett, Governor of Gotham FC, remarked, “We are aiming to establish Gotham FC as a leading name in women’s soccer and a global figure in the sport. The creation of our first specifically designed training facility represents a significant step forward, offering our players and staff the essential resources of a true home. This commitment showcases our belief that top athletes deserve unparalleled environments. We’re not just building a facility; we’re creating a space centered on performance, recovery, development, and community, all while laying down a legacy for future players.”

She added, “As women’s sports gain momentum worldwide, we aspire for Gotham FC to exemplify what’s achievable and contribute to a lasting foundation.” The new facility will also accommodate players’ families as well as coaching staff.

Renovations are slated to wrap up by the summer of 2027, with work kicking off later this summer. The design is a collaborative effort with SHoP Architects, known for their work on Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.

This project carries a price tag of $35 million, is privately funded, and includes a 15-year lease that starts on September 1, according to reports.

Gotham FC’s president of soccer operations, Yael Apfelbusch-West, stated, “We’re committed to crafting an environment where our players can excel, rejuvenate, and evolve daily. This facility is crucial for harmonizing our infrastructure with our sporting ambitions, ensuring we maintain elite standards.”

The announcement comes as Gotham is also in talks regarding a potential move to the soon-to-be-opened Etihad Park in Queens, adjacent to Citi Field. Recent reports indicated that they might relocate to New York City FC’s new grounds as early as 2028, although various sources have mentioned that no agreements have been finalized.

The site for the new training facility had previously hosted the Red Bulls, who relocated to a new training center in Morristown, New Jersey, earlier in April. This new facility is currently being utilized as the training base for Brazil’s World Cup national team.
