Thornton Discusses the Success of “Landman”

Billy Bob Thornton shared his thoughts on the global popularity of Taylor Sheridan’s show “Landman” during an interview at the Newport Beach TV Fest. He noted that audiences from various economic backgrounds, especially the working class, connect deeply with the series due to its depiction of struggle.

“I think working people really empathize with the hardships that families go through and the people who work in this industry,” Thornton expressed. He believes that Sheridan’s unique storytelling has resonated with viewers worldwide, making “Landman” a standout success.

“What’s really striking about Taylor is that he seems to understand everyone. This show appeals to so many because it reflects real experiences,” he remarked.

Thornton continued, pointing out that “Landman” diverges from the usual narrative norms. While many shows stick to predictable patterns, “Landman” incorporates a blend of emotion, humor, drama, and elements of absurdity. “It really has it all,” he added, emphasizing the authentic portrayal of its characters.

The series is inspired by the podcast “Boomtown” and explores the oil boom in West Texas’s Permian Basin from the early 2010s when advances in drilling technology played a crucial role. At the center of the story is Thornton’s character, Tommy Norris, who works as a crisis manager for an oil company.

Thornton isn’t the only cast member praising the series. Andy Garcia, who stars alongside Thornton, commented on the exceptional ensemble Sheridan has built. He noted that the quality of the script and the cohesive storytelling are key to its success.

Garcia highlighted, “It all begins with the storytelling and how Taylor constructs the season.” Paramount+ has officially announced a third season of “Landman,” solidifying its place in the entertainment landscape.
