North Korea's drone activities result in a 30-year prison term for South Korea's Yoon.

Former South Korean President Sentenced to 30 Years

A South Korean court has handed down a 30-year prison sentence to former President Yoon Seok-yeol on charges related to his decision to order drone flights over North Korea. This action was reportedly intended to justify the imposition of martial law.

At the Seoul Central District Court, the 65-year-old Yoon was found guilty alongside former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun. It’s noteworthy that Yoon was already serving a life sentence for leading an uprising following the martial law declaration back in December 2024.

North Korea had previously accused South Korea of conducting drone flights over Pyongyang three times in October 2024, allegedly to drop propaganda leaflets.

Legislative Response to Martial Law Declaration

It appears that South Korean lawmakers were supportive of temporarily suspending presidential powers during a brief period of martial law. Initially, Kim, the former Defense Minister, offered a vague denial about the drone flights, but the Ministry of Defense claimed it couldn’t confirm or deny the allegations.

This situation escalated tensions between the two Koreas, although no military conflict resulted from the drone incident. Prosecutors argued that Yoon was attempting to provoke a crisis with North Korea while simultaneously seeking to consolidate power and eliminate political opposition.

Sedition Trial Verdict

Prior to declaring martial law, Yoon made a televised statement accusing liberal lawmakers of being sympathetic to North Korea. He insisted that he had constitutional authority for his actions, claiming they were necessary to address perceived obstruction by opposition parties. However, his attempt to enforce martial law lasted only about six hours, as lawmakers quickly voted to revoke it amid widespread public protests.

Yoon was arrested in July 2025 and currently faces several criminal proceedings. Interestingly, both Yoon, who even sought the death penalty for his charges, and the prosecution are appealing the verdict related to the riot.
