Bulgarian Immigrant Convicted in Assault Case

The case involving a Bulgarian immigrant in Scotland has taken an unexpected twist following a judge’s ruling on allegations of racial discrimination.

Ilya Belov, a 22-year-old from Bulgaria, was found guilty on Thursday for attacking a group of girls last September, including one girl who was 12 at the time and has since been referred to as the “Scottish Ax Girl.”

The young woman’s family claimed they used a weapon in self-defense against what they described as abusive immigrants. This week, Judge Timothy Niven-Smith at Dundee Sheriff Court ruled against Belov after examining what was termed “evidence beyond a reasonable doubt.”

The now-13-year-old girl accused Belov of making sexual remarks while she was walking with friends to a bus stop. “He kept saying things like ‘Come on sexy, I’ll show you how to have fun,'” she recalled. When Belov’s sister arrived at the scene, she attacked one of the girls, and Belov allegedly pushed her to the ground.

Belov claimed he was acting to protect his sister but also denied making any inappropriate comments. He argued that the girls had referred to him as a “fucking immigrant.”

However, the judge found his defense unconvincing. Niven-Smith stated that Belov’s testimony was “not believable or reliable” and highlighted inconsistencies, like his choice to turn his back on the girl despite fearing an attack.

The judge pointed out that Belov’s own comments had fueled the conflict. “I accept that your remarks led to abuse directed at you, including being called a ‘slut and an immigrant,'” he elaborated.

Niven-Smith emphasized how the children’s statements clearly illustrated Belov’s actions. After making sexual remarks, he reportedly became angry when they retaliated with insults.

The judge also criticized Belov for contacting his sister instead of alerting the authorities or leaving the area. Upon her arrival, she attacked another girl almost immediately.

Belov’s assertion that he saw a knife under the girl’s shirt was dismissed; the judge was “completely satisfied” that video evidence showed Belov had assaulted the girl.

Concluding the case, Belov was found guilty of assault and abusive behavior toward four girls. His sister, Nadjeja Belova, 20, admitted to assaulting a 13-year-old.

Sentencing for both will take place on August 5th.
