Taxi Union Required to Address Fellow New Yorkers After Driver Reportedly Exited Vehicle During Chaotic Celebrations

Celebration Turns Chaotic After Knicks’ Victory

Following the Knicks’ latest triumph in the NBA Finals, New York’s taxi drivers faced a unfortunate fallout amid the celebrations across the city.

The New York Taxi Workers Alliance (NYTWA) reported that a member was reportedly pulled from their vehicle during a street celebration. According to a statement shared on Company X, the driver experienced shock and sustained injuries to his arms, back, and head. The NYTWA also indicated that someone climbed onto the taxi, damaging the hood.

This chaos erupted after the Knicks secured an impressive win against the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 of the Finals on June 10, thanks to a crucial tip-in by OG Anunoby. A crowd had gathered around Madison Square Garden, and in the aftermath, police arrested multiple individuals. The NYPD highlighted that many people engaged in reckless and unsafe behavior during and after the game.

The celebration extended throughout the city, with fans filling the streets, bars, and bodegas as the team approached its first championship since 1973. Celebrations reportedly spanned from Herald Square to Central Park and even Staten Island.

NYTWA took this opportunity to remind everyone that each yellow cab on the road represents a dedicated worker. They emphasized that drivers were actively working, following fares, tuning in to the game on the radio, and waiting in airport parking. The union noted that these drivers aimed to help fellow New Yorkers get home safely.

Furthermore, the union pointed out that taxi drivers often finance their vehicles through loans or leases, and they incur expenses just to be able to work. They deserve safety and respect during both quiet times and moments of public celebration.

“Those who transform this joyous occasion into a nightmare for others should feel ashamed,” the union stated.
