'Fundamental Change': AI Data Center Critics Halt or Postpone Projects Valued at Almost $130B in 2026

Opposition to AI Data Centers Surges in 2026

This year, opponents of AI data center construction have managed to block or delay an unprecedented number of projects, totaling around $130 billion, as indicated by a recent study.

Between January and March, at least 75 projects were either halted or postponed across the U.S., according to a Data Center Watch study mentioned by NBC News.

Notably, this period marks the highest recorded outage for AI data centers since tracking began in 2023.

The study reveals a significant shift in public sentiment: “This quarter reflected a structural shift rather than a cyclical surge: communities internalized opposition strategies, Congress introduced formal regulatory uncertainty, and the number of active opposition groups more than doubled to 833 in 49 states,” the researchers noted.

Additionally, the total number and valuation of disrupted data centers in the first quarter of this year are expected to match the total for all of 2025.

As highlighted by Breitbart News last month, the topic of AI data centers has become a heated political issue. A Gallup poll indicates that a large majority of Americans are against having AI data centers in their communities.

Opponents point to noise, air and water pollution, along with concerns for the environment and quality of living, as their primary reasons for resistance.

Recently, country music artist Brad Paisley urged the public to oppose a proposed AI data center just 50 meters from the Nashville Zoo, describing it as an “absolute nightmare scenario” and labeling it a “huge monster.”

Moreover, Gallup suggests that AI infrastructure may emerge as a critical issue in local and state elections this year, with politicians supporting data center developments likely to find themselves in politically precarious situations.

A Data Center Watch study also reported a notable increase in legislative efforts aimed at enforcing a moratorium on AI data center construction in the first quarter of 2026, with support coming from lawmakers across the political spectrum.

In just the first six weeks of 2026, over 300 bills were introduced in state legislatures nationwide, marking a “clear shift from incentive-driven policy to regulatory oversight as the scale of energy demand becomes clearer,” according to the authors.

They also mentioned that the number of grassroots groups opposing data centers more than doubled, from 396 at the end of 2025 to 833 by March. The states with the most opposition included Maryland, Ohio, and Texas.

Interestingly, in some instances, opposition formed even before projects were officially submitted; just rumors about potential data centers have been enough to ignite organized resistance.

AI data centers are likely to remain a significant topic in political discourse across the nation. In a related note, Wynton Hall from Breitbart News discusses in his book how the MAGA movement can develop a balanced perspective on AI that serves humanity’s interests while avoiding yielding control to Silicon Valley or foreign powers.
