Director Sofia Coppola’s Concerns Over Abortion Rights
In a recent statement, director and screenwriter Sofia Coppola expressed her discontent with the Trump administration’s attempts to cut funding for Planned Parenthood, which she describes as a vital organization for reproductive rights. She fears that her daughter may no longer enjoy the liberties she has known since childhood.
Joining abortion advocates at a recent event in Greenwich Village, New York, Coppola stood in solidarity with those fighting for reproductive health. She attended the “No Matter What” gathering hosted by Planned Parenthood to raise awareness and criticize the recent changes following the reversal of Roe vs. Wade.
With a legacy of advocacy for women’s rights, Coppola reflected on her late mother, Eleanor Neal, a documentary filmmaker who vehemently supported abortion services. Now, Sofia finds herself echoing similar worries about her daughters losing their rights under the current political climate.
Coppola remarked, “This is so shocking because my mother was a supporter of family planning, and her generation fought for all the rights that we took for granted.” It’s difficult for her to fathom that her daughter’s generation could be deprived of these fundamental rights. “We all need to do whatever we can to support health care for everyone,” she added.
Following the end of Roe vs. Wade in 2022, the long-standing federal abortion guidelines were dismantled, shifting the authority for regulations back to the states. This move sparked wide-ranging discussions about the future of reproductive rights in America.
In a 5-4 decision, Justice Samuel Alito articulated that “Abortion raises serious moral questions. The Constitution does not prohibit the people of each state from regulating or banning abortion. Roe and Casey made that power arrogant. We are now reversing those decisions and returning that power to the people and their elected representatives.”
Beyond her advocacy for abortion rights, Coppola is also making headlines for opposing the merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery alongside other Hollywood figures.
