John Stamos Remembers Dean Martin’s Advice
John Stamos recently shared a memorable encounter he had with the iconic Dean Martin while seeking guidance early in his career.
Stamos, known for his role in “Full House,” got his start as Blackie Parrish on “General Hospital” from 1982 to 1984. By the end of his time on the soap, he was eager to break free from the genre and explore comedic roles.
“When I left ‘General Hospital,’ the producer, Gloria Monti, was against my decision as I was looking to pursue something humorous,” Stamos recounted on Joseph Sibilia’s “Friars Club Podcast,” a conversation that resurfaced recently. He added, “I really wanted to be on a sitcom, something like a Garry Marshall show.”
Despite Monti’s attempts to keep him on the show, Stamos felt that he needed a change. “She asked me, ‘So why do you want to leave my show?’ and I simply replied, ‘I want to be funny.'” His desires were clear, though the conversation had its humorous undertones as Monti seemed skeptical.
During one particular moment, while they were out, Monti spotted Martin dining alone and introduced Stamos to him. Stamos recalled that Monti asked Martin to persuade him to reconsider leaving “General Hospital.”
In a rather unexpected twist, Martin looked at Stamos and advised him to “Run.” That brief interaction had a lasting impact on Stamos, highlighting Martin’s straightforward nature.
Stamos eventually starred in “Dreams” in 1984, followed by “You Again?” from 1986 to 1987, before landing his breakout role as Jesse Katsopolis on “Full House,” which he played until 1995 and revisited in “Fuller House” from 2016 to 2020.
Martin, known for his larger-than-life persona, was often seen dining out in later years. His daughter, Deanna Martin, described how her father preferred his solitude, enjoying meals at familiar spots where he could sit quietly. It appears, even amongst the bustle of Hollywood, he relished peaceful moments away from the spotlight.
Dean Martin passed away on Christmas Day in 1995 at the age of 78, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate in the entertainment world.
