World Cup Sparks Parking Boom in Inglewood

The FIFA World Cup has ignited a parking frenzy around SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. Homeowners are discovering that their driveways might be some of the most valuable spaces in the area.

The temporary renaming of the stadium to “Los Angeles Stadium” ahead of the tournament has attracted crowds globally, creating a surge in parking demand. This has opened up opportunities for local residents to capitalize on the situation.

Parking reservation services are charging up to $300 on game days for spots near the stadium. In contrast, local homeowners are offering their driveways, with prices ranging from $50 to $80. For many, this presents an appealing and straightforward option.

One Inglewood resident shared, “I have about three or four properties. If I rent those three for $50, that’s a quick $150.” She mentioned that as demand grows during the tournament, more opportunities could arise.

“I think we could see things go much further. Today is just the beginning… If you do the math, there’s a lot of money to be made,” she added.

This situation around SoFi Stadium exemplifies basic supply and demand principles in action. Major events tend to concentrate demand in specific areas, allowing residents to tap into rapidly evolving local markets.

Economists often refer to this as an efficient system. When individuals closest to the demand can set prices, they create value without needing corporate middlemen.

However, the city isn’t on board with this practice. The Inglewood Parking and Transportation Authority states that “a commercial parking permit and a business permit are required to rent a private parking space for an event.”

Inglewood’s Mayor, James Butts, has cautioned residents about getting involved. Yet, official World Cup parking prices illustrate how high costs can soar when supply is limited.

Parking passes near SoFi Stadium can range from $250 to $300 per game, varying by the event, with higher prices for U.S. Men’s National Team games and the quarterfinals.

Official parking lots, including those by the Intuit Dome, are about a 25-minute walk to the stadium gates.

The system is being managed by the Tournament Channel, with FIFA overseeing parking assignments and revenue from designated spaces. For high-demand games, official parking revenue can hit between $150 and $300 per vehicle.

This situation sheds light on the wider economic landscape in Inglewood, where the median household income stands around $72,750. For context, two full-time workers earning the Los Angeles County minimum wage typically make between $67,000 and $71,000 annually.

It’s worth noting that this informal parking economy isn’t entirely new to Los Angeles. For years, residents near the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, particularly around Exposition Park, have utilized their driveways for game-day parking for USC Trojans football games.
