Cornell University Student’s Anti-Semitic Remarks Spark Outcry
Austin Franco, a student at Cornell University, is currently being investigated after he declined an internship at the Jewish-owned startup, VryfID. He stated he was “not interested in working for a Jewish person.” This incident has ignited discussions about anti-Semitism among youth, emphasizing the role of parents and educational institutions in combating hatred and discrimination on college campuses.
The startup’s founders, Gabe and Aiden Einhorn, reported that Franco was rejected from an internship interview because of his comments. VryfID operates in New York City, providing services that connect renters with landlords and verify their identities to curb fraud.
Aiden Einhorn commented, “I would like to have a quick call to explain more about what we’re building.” Yet Franco’s response was blunt: “I have no interest in working for a Jew. Thank you.”
This situation reflects a broader issue of discriminatory attitudes. Franco explained that his own experiences with Jewish individuals have largely been negative, although he did acknowledge some positive interactions. He believes that the backlash he received only reinforces his views.
Cornell University has publicly condemned Franco’s comments. They expressed their commitment to promoting a respectful environment and indicated that the Office for Civil Rights is looking into the matter. The university stated, “This incident has violated the terms of service for the Handshake platform, and we take such violations very seriously.”
Gabe Einhorn remarked that Franco’s sentiments exemplify a dangerous trend of generalization against particular groups, highlighting that hatred is rampant in today’s society. He urged against stereotyping any religious or racial group, pointing out that people from all backgrounds can and do collaborate successfully.
Franco was originally slated to attend an event but chose to withdraw, expressing his desire to see how his situation evolves with the university. He stated, “I will continue to advocate for what I believe in, irrespective of public opinion.”
As of now, there has been no further response from Franco following the controversy. The dialogue initiated by this incident illustrates ongoing concerns regarding prejudices in educational settings and the need for awareness and action against discrimination.
