Variety criticizes Donald Trump for hosting the UFC 250 Freedom event at the White House, calling it 'Idiocracy'

Greg Gutfeld’s Take on UFC Event at the White House

On a recent episode of “The Five,” the co-hosts discussed the notable difference between a UFC event held at President Donald Trump’s White House and liberal counter-rallies featuring celebrities like Robert De Niro and Julia Roberts. Greg Gutfeld referred to the liberal gathering as “mentally ill” while delving into contrasting opinions.

It seems that American celebrations really earn the ire of the left, particularly when they’re tied to a political figure with differing views. The UFC event outside the White House on Sunday night presented perfect fodder for leftist media eager to express disdain, and, boy, did they voice their displeasure over an event celebrating America.

A piece in Variety, usually focused on entertainment news, published a seemingly irate column. Marlowe Stern’s article claimed the UFC event was akin to a scene from “Idiocracy.” In her words, “Never has President Trump’s term more resembled scenes from Mike Judge’s 2006 ‘Idiocracy’ than on Sunday night, when he hosted UFC Freedom 250 on the South Lawn to ‘celebrate’ America’s 250th anniversary.” She sarcastically noted it also marked Trump’s 80th birthday, suggesting he craves attention.

It’s important to mention that the spectacle of the event—complete with a flyover, a lively atmosphere, and the construction of a stage on the lawn—was all funded by the UFC. Taxpayers weren’t on the hook for that. Even amid all the complaints, the enthusiasm from attendees was tangible.

Stern was further irate about the “flashy” broadcast of the event on Paramount+, a platform owned by Trump supporter David Ellison. She seemed particularly bothered that CBS is becoming more “MAGA-friendly.” It raises questions; would Stern have reacted the same if MSNBC showcased a Biden event celebrating something like Pride Month?

This discontent appears more rooted in a deep-seated dislike for Trump than for the UFC or the event itself. The charge of “MAGA-friendly” reporting simply means striving for a more balanced representation in media—a notion that seems foreign to Stern, who appears used to a media landscape aligning with her views.

Stern didn’t stop with her critique. She even took Joe Rogan’s comment about the event being “surreal” and twisted it, making an odd mention of Jean Rogan. It somehow fit within her broader criticism, which seemed more personal than nuanced.

The real issue is that Stern, like many, seems to filter everything through a political lens. When the Republican Party is involved, every comment, event, or film gets scrutinized through that perspective. The same scrutiny doesn’t seem to apply when Democrats are in charge.

Amid the outcry about events organized by the Biden administration, it’s interesting to see criticism against a national celebration being aired. Celebrating America with a sporting event shouldn’t trigger such anger, yet it seems to. Ultimately, what surfaces is a repetitive pattern of politically motivated criticism.
