A former Knicks fan, who gained attention for selling his fan allegiance on eBay in 2018, has recently expressed deep regret over his decision. Evan Perlmutter, now 40, initially claimed he felt no remorse about parting ways with his team to support the Boston Celtics instead, which he did for a hefty $3,450.
However, after the Knicks remarkable victory over the Spurs to clinch this year’s NBA championship, Perlmutter revealed that he was feeling overwhelmed and couldn’t keep it together any longer. Just last month, he had confidently stated that he had “no regrets whatsoever,” but that sentiment has changed.
“If you tell me, we’ll definitely win one,” he reflected, adding perhaps a hint of longing for how things might change over the years. He didn’t categorically say he regretted his decision, but remarked, “In fact, I do regret it.”
Perlmutter voiced feelings of anger and distrust, admitting that he felt disheartened about missing out on a significant event in sports history. He lamented the fact that he wouldn’t be able to celebrate this win with his childhood friends, who were supporting the Knicks with passion.
One of his friends acknowledged that this moment must feel bittersweet for him. Perlmutter pointed out that it’s challenging for him to remain unaffected in a city buzzing with Knicks pride. “I’m biting my lip here, frustrated,” he confessed, noting the charged energy in the air in New York as everyone around him shares in the team’s triumph.
Describing the atmosphere, he remarked that everyone seems to walk a little taller, filled with pride, while he feels like an outsider. He referred to himself as the “Grinch” amid all the celebrations. As he continued to reflect on his choice almost a decade ago, Perlmutter captured the complexity of his feelings, saying, “I cared too much. I got sucked into a team that didn’t make good decisions. It was like staying in an abusive relationship.”
