Laverne Cox Discusses Financial Struggles Amid Political Climate
Transgender actor Laverne Cox recently expressed that he has experienced a significant decrease in income—reportedly by 90%. He specifically attributes this financial decline to the policies of President Donald Trump’s administration.
Cox, who is biologically male, mentioned during an interview with The Guardian that opportunities for hosting events have diminished, and corporate partnerships seem to have vanished. Moreover, existing deals have not been renewed. He noted that since Trump returned to office in January 2025, the Education Department has been targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in U.S. universities.
Cox stated bluntly, “This regime has threatened to defund any colleges and universities that promote gender ideology, DEI.” He further elaborated that he is struggling to secure teaching roles. “Even if I were to teach a graduate acting class, there’s a perception that it could promote trans ideology,” he clarified.
However, Cox emphasized that he’s not looking to complain. He said, “I’m very blessed.” Yet, he raises an important point: “If my income has taken such a hit, what about other trans individuals who are not as fortunate?”
He amplified his thoughts, asserting, “There are material consequences for this kind of discrimination and scapegoating.” Cox also criticized the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, highlighting the removal of terms such as gender, LGBTQ, and DEI from various pieces of legislation and policy documents.
Interestingly, despite his criticism of Trump’s anti-DEI stance and its impact on his finances, Cox stepped away from his long-standing role as the host of E!’s “Live From the Red Carpet” in January 2025 after three years in that position.
