Inside the America250 time capsule: a glimpse of valuable US historical artifacts

Philadelphia’s Historic Time Capsule Almost Ready for Burial

A unique collection of American history is set to be buried in Philadelphia, marking the approach of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

In an exclusive reveal, the final contents of the America 250 time capsule were shared. This waterproof stainless steel container, weighing 900 pounds, holds around 200 donations from all over the country.

“The contents of the time capsule are incredible,” remarked Rosie Rios, Chair of America 250, on Monday.

Rios emphasized that it’s important for all three branches of government to be represented, capturing the diversity of the 56 regions, including the 50 states, D.C., and five territories, along with contributions from ordinary Americans.

When it is buried on July 4 at Independence National Historical Park, the vessel topped with an 1,100-pound lid will weigh almost a ton. It’s designed to protect a collection of artifacts aimed at captivating future generations during this significant anniversary.

Rios pointed out that Philadelphia is the perfect location for the capsule’s final resting place, scheduled to be reopened in 2276.

“This is where our country was born, and in 250 years, we’ll be buried here,” she stated.

Inside the capsule are items that reflect America’s rich history, culture, and identity.

Some highlighted contributions include a pocket constitution signed by a Supreme Court justice, a crystal from the 2026 New Year’s Eve ball in Times Square, a message in a Coca-Cola bottle, an American flag that flew at the 2026 Rose Parade, and an NFL America 250 commemorative coin.

Rios mentioned that the capstone and artifacts will be exhibited in Philadelphia as a reminder that history is waiting for future Americans.

“I hope our great-grandchildren, and even further down the line, get to appreciate this,” Rios added.
